Students are required to perform an FMX (Full Mouth X-Ray) on a dental manikin with no more than five errors, without assistance.

In California, dental assistants must hold a California Radiation Safety (X-Ray) certificate to take x-rays within a dental practice. Additionally, any applicant seeking licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) must provide proof of completing an approved radiation safety course.

The Orange County Dental Institute is an approved provider by the California Dental Board, offering certification in Radiation Safety. Upon successful completion of our course, students will be awarded an X-ray certificate/license.

The course covers both theoretical and practical elements of x-ray safety, including bisecting and parallel techniques, film exposure, processing, and mounting of non-digital x-rays. We will also provide training on digital x-rays (Dexis) and assess both digital and non-digital dental x-ray images. Instruction will be delivered through a combination of online and in-person lectures, instructional videos, and individual training with dental x-ray manikins and live patients. The California Dental Board will be notified upon achieving certification in Radiation Safety.

This program is intended for individuals already trained in Dental Intra-oral Radiography. Each student must arrange for four clinical patients, producing one FMX per patient. Before the course begins, students need to complete full-mouth x-rays (FMX), which consist of 18 images per patient, including four bitewings, for three of these clinical patients at their current facility
